Since the successful introduction of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) and its combination with anthracycline-containing chemotherapy, the prognosis for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) has markedly improved. With ATRA and anthracycline-based-chemotherapy, the complete remission rate is greater than 90%, and the long-term survival rate is 70-89%. Moreover, arsenic trioxide (ATO), which was introduced for APL treatment in 1994, resulted in excellent remission rates... |

Neutropenia is defined as an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of <1,500/µL, and the severity of neutropenia generally can be graded as mild (1,000-1,500/µL), moderate (500-1,000/µL), or severe (<500/µL). This stratification aids in predicting the risk of pyogenic infection because the susceptibility to life-threatening infections is significantly increased in patients with prolonged episodes of severe neutropenia. Especially cancer-related neutropenia carry significant... |

We studied the frequency by age group and causal pathogens, and clinical characteristics in children with bacterial meningitis in the private sector in Korea.
Methods : The medical records containing the data on bacterial meningitis patients... |

Purpose : A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the usefulness of low risk criteria for identifying febrile infants younger than three months unlikely to have serious bacterial infection.
Methods : We conducted a retrospective study of 527 infants younger than three month with a axillary temperature ≥37.4℃. If they met the following all four criteria, appear well, WBC 5,000- 20,000/mm3,... |

Purpose : The diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is difficult and delayed because it presents with various clinical symptoms. We evaluated clinical, imaging and pathologic findings of Meckel's diverticulum to facilitate detection of Meckel's diverticulum in children.
Methods : Review of clinical, imaging, surgical and pathological findings in 10 children aged 7 days to 14 years with Meckel's diverticulum during an 8-year... |

Hepatoblastoma is the most common primary malignant liver tumor in childhood. Most cases are boys generally below three years of age. Hepatoblastoma are associated with various non-metastatic syndromes. Rarely, human chorionic gonadotropin may be produced by the tumor. Ectopic gonadotropin production from this source is a rare cause of precocious puberty in boys. Since a report by Behrendt in 1931,... |

Thymic carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from the thymic epithelium, and is known to be extremely uncommon in the pediatric population. The tumor is clinically highly aggressive with frequent local intrathoracic spread and extrathoracic metastases detected in the majority of patients at initial diagnosis and often shows minimal or no response to conventional chemotherapy. We experienced two pediatric patients... |

Purpose : We evaluated the response to immunomodulation therapy, long-term survival and relapse
rate of aplastic anemia during follow-up for more than 1 year.
Methods : Twenty-eight children, with moderate to severe aplastic anemia were followed for more
than one year and 7 children expired after therapy, were analyzed. Antilymphocyte globulin(ALG) or
antithymocyte globulin(ATG) by itself was given to 27 patients, and cyclosporine A(CsA)... |

Purpose : Recently, in high risk preterm infants, we experienced high incidence of hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis & nephrocalcinosis. To screen hypercalciuria, we need the normal value of random urine Ca/Cr ratio in healthy neonates according to gestational age, postnatal age, milk and calcium intake.
Methods : Random urine Ca/Cr ratio was checked in 260 healthy full-term infants at the 2-7th day, and... |

Purpose : Nebulized selective β2-adrenoreceptor agonists have been widely used in acute asthma
and selectively in acute bronchiolitis. However, nebulized salbutamol have been reported to cause
arterial oxygen desaturation in some of the acute bronchiolitis and severe asthma patients. This
may be the results of a paradoxical bronchoconstriction linked to acidic and hyper-osmolar
nebulized salbutamol solution and etc. We assessed the changes in arterial... |

T cell lymphoblastic lymphoma is characterized by immature lymphoid cells that are indistinguishable from the lymphoblasts and prolymphocytes of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Several characteristic clinical features of lymphoblastic lymphoma, with include a high male-to-female ratio, a relatively high incidence in older children and young adults, the frequent presence of mediastinal involvement at the time of diagnosis. Also, this disease is... |
